The Simple Answer to Social Media Marketing Your Creative Small Business That Everyone Hates to Hear

Alright friends… It’s time for some real talk about Instagram (and TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, and maybe even LinkedIn).
As a social media marketer, I get asked all the time:
“How do I grow my audience?”
“How do I get more reach?”
“How do I get more views?”
“How do I build a platform?”
There is one very simple answer to how to gain momentum on social media, and the majority of my clients won’t do it.
PUT. YOUR. FACE. ON. VIDEO.
That’s it. That's the answer.
I spend hours crafting top-tier content, designing infographics, scheduling posts, writing captions, and building full campaigns for my clients. And all those things are very valuable… but nothing, and I mean nothing, will build momentum for you like YOU simply talking to your phone about your area of expertise for 30 seconds and posting that every few days!
I know. It’s scary. But it works.
Every. Single. Time.
A casual video of you chatting straight into the camera will outperform your prettiest carousel or your wittiest meme. Why? Because people want to connect with people… not Canva templates (and I say this as someone who loves making social media graphics on Canva).
Why This Works (Even If You Hate It)
Almost every single one of my clients resists this at first. Even the performers who are actually used to being in front of an audience. Because yes, it is uncomfortable at the beginning.
But when they actually do it, the difference in engagement is practically instant.
And yes, I get it. For most of us, the thought of putting our faces on the internet (especially in video form) makes us want to disappear. Heck, I pay one of my favourite artists to draw me as a cartoon for my social posts so I don’t have to post myself online. (I guess this is one of those "do as I say, not as I do" situations, lol)
But here’s the truth: if you are at the heart of your brand, then you are what sets your work apart. Whether you’re a musician, visual artist, writer, real estate agent, therapist, coach, or creator of any kind, you need to be seen.
As creatives, we would like our art to speak for itself, but the truth is… People don’t just buy your art, just like they won't just buy your service or product. They buy connection.
They want to see you. Hear you. Trust you. And consistently posting videos featuring YOU is the fastest way that you can build that trust.
Your Social Media Manager (a.k.a. Me) Can’t Do It For You
I can create your strategy, map out your content calendar, design your graphics, write your copy, and make sure your posts are polished and on-brand.
But if you are the face of your business, we need to work together. I can’t be you.
Your audience wants you, not just a feed full of pretty infographics.
And if you’re someone with a lot to say? I promise you, no one is reading that novel you wrote in the caption. They want to hear it from you.
