Social Media for Artists

Simple Strategies for Sustainable Content Creation

Social media has become an indispensable tool for artists and artisans seeking to showcase their work and connect with potential customers. It has allowed countless creators to be discovered and appreciated by folks who might otherwise not even know of their existence. However, the relentless demand for new content can be overwhelming and downright exhausting. The split-second it takes to consume content doesn’t jive with the hours spent creating fine crafts and works of art. So, how can artists keep up with the fast-paced world of social media while still honouring the time it takes to create something of substance? Here are some strategies to make your social media content creation more sustainable.

1. Create a Posting Schedule

One of the proven keys to maintaining consistency on social media without sacrificing precious creative time is to establish a posting schedule. Instead of trying to come up with something to post to your social channels every day, dedicate a few hours once a week or even once a month to plan and schedule your posts in advance. This allows you to maintain a regular presence on social media while freeing up time to focus on your artistic endeavours.

2. Balance Pre-Made and Spontaneous Posts

One of my favourite strategies is to blend pre-made, pre-planned posts with spontaneous updates. This strikes a balance between the consistency we social media managers preach and the spontaneity an artistic soul flourishes under. Schedule some posts ahead of time, such as previously finished artwork or planned promotions, while interspersing them with real-time updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, or work-in-progress shots. This approach ensures that your social media account remains active and engaging even during periods when it might otherwise have gone quiet.

3. Utilize Every Aspect of Your Art Process

Remember, “everything is content!” Unless you craft at the speed of The Flash, having every social media post a separate finished project is just not sustainable. Instead, document your creative process by taking photos or videos as you work on your projects. Invite your audience to participate by making posts that ask questions and encourage them to share their own experiences. Share photos of your creations in customers’ homes. Create posts that share insights into your inspiration, techniques, and favourite art supplies. Embrace the authenticity of your journey as an artist and let your personality shine through in your posts. By giving followers a glimpse into your process, you humanize your brand and foster a deeper connection with your audience… which actually leaves a more lasting impression than that beautiful photo of your latest hand-thrown ceramic bowl ever could.

4. Show Your Face (or Create a Mascot)

Some artists choose to approach their social channels like they would a formal art gallery, but here’s the thing about social media… it’s social. People are here in search of connection. They don’t just want a pretty picture to look at, they want to connect with the person behind the art. You can ‘show your face’ in a literal way by posting pictures and videos of yourself sharing stories, anecdotes, and personal experiences as a creator. Some folks who aren’t as comfortable showing their faces will create a mascot or persona. You can also ‘show your face’ in a more figurative way. Simply show your personality throughout your posts by allowing your unique perspective and voice to shine through. The point is to be someone people can feel connected to.

5. Repost Your Artwork

It's okay to repost your artwork multiple times! With the ever-changing algorithms and the sheer volume of content on social media, many of your followers may not see your posts the first time around. By reposting your artwork at spaced intervals, you can remind your followers of your beautiful creations and increase the chances of reaching a wider audience. It took you a long time to paint that picture or craft that sculpture, so honour it and don't be afraid to post it multiple times. By reposting your best-performing content or giving older pieces a fresh caption or context, you can breathe new life into your feed without having to constantly create something new.

6. Don't Create Art Specifically for Social Media

IT'S A TRAP! While social media is a powerful tool for exposure, don't let it dictate your artistic process. Avoid the temptation to create art solely to garner likes or “go viral”. That’s a recipe for burnout! Stay true to your artistic vision and create work that speaks to you personally. Remember, your art is more than just a commodity... It's a reflection of your creativity, passion, and authenticity.

While social media is a powerful tool for artists to showcase their work and connect with their audience, it's essential to strike a balance between maintaining a consistent presence and preserving time for creative pursuits. Your social media presence is a journey, never a destination. You have to pace yourself! By implementing a posting schedule, leveraging every aspect of your art process, and embracing authenticity, artists can navigate the fast-paced world of social media while staying true to their craft. Remember, your art is more important than the demands of the digital world. Take care of yourself and prioritize what truly matters to you.
