Hey Musicians! Are Your Visuals About to Ruin Your Reputation?
AI images may seem like the quick, easy, budget-friendly option, but your visuals are part of your brand identity. It is important to ask yourself whether using AI fits your Brand Values.

As a branding-obsessed social media manager, I talk a lot about the three V’s of brand identity: Values, Voice, and Visuals.
Your values are the foundation of your brand. They should define who you are as a musical artist, guide your career path, and shape your fanbase. Everything you put out into the world should reflect your values. When clearly defined and intentionally followed, your brand values also protect your integrity and reputation.
To develop a strong Brand Identity, your voice and visuals need to be in alignment with your values. Listen, your visuals are super important! Before you play a single note, they are already communicating who you are. This is why it matters how you create them...
The Problem with AI Visuals
More and more musicians (even big-name bands who absolutely can afford to hire human artists) are turning to AI to create their album art, music videos, social media graphics, merch designs, and more.
But fans can tell when your visuals are AI-generated. And whether you personally care about these issues or not, visuals created with AI can communicate some pretty damaging messages about you and your brand. They say things like:
You don’t value art. Which is pretty ironic if you’re calling yourself an artist.
You don’t respect other creators. AI images are generated by training on stolen artwork from real artists.
You care more about convenience than quality. If you won’t invest in your visuals, fans may start questioning the quality of your music, too.
You’re okay with environmental harm. Generative AI comes with a massive energy cost.
Whether or not these issues matter to you, they matter to a large portion of your audience. For a multitude of reasons, many music fans don't want to see AI-generated visuals. So, by using AI, you risk losing those fans... fast.
Don’t Believe Me? Ask Three Days Grace Fans
This is just one example. A fan posted a TikTok video showing footage from a recent Three Days Grace concert, calling their AI-generated backdrop “the worst concert visuals of the year.” The comments blew up with the consensus being quite brutal.

Here’s what fans said those visuals communicated about the band:
Old and Out of Touch. The blazing skulls, scary clowns, and shattering glass looked cheesy and dated. Fans mocked the band for thinking AI was “cool.” These comments show how quickly the band’s choice of visuals shifted the perception from “rock legends” to “out-of-touch old guys.” Instead of amplifying their stage presence, the visuals undermined their reputation.

Low Value. When fans pay good money to see a band live, they expect an experience. Concert visuals are part of that atmosphere, and audiences notice when a band cuts corners. Several commenters pointed out that Three Days Grace tickets weren’t cheap, yet the band still opted for AI visuals instead of investing in intentional, human-made stage design. To fans, it signalled that the band didn’t care enough to deliver real value. That kind of disappointment doesn’t just ruin one night; it erodes loyalty to the band itself.

Hypocritical. For a counter-culture band, embracing AI clashed with the very values their fans expected them to stand for. When your actions don’t align with your values or the values of your fans, you will quickly lose their respect.
Disrespectful to Visual Artists. Many pointed out that if a band won’t pay visual artists, they’re not standing in solidarity with the art community. As one commenter put it: “If they won’t pay for artists, I won’t pay for their music.”

All the comments on this blog are from just that one TikTok video. There were a lot more comments similar to these. I'm just sharing a small handful. Also, take note of how many 'likes' some of these comments have gotten so far! There are a lot of people with the same opinion.
That’s a lot of reputational damage for one backdrop!
So, What Does This Mean for You?
You might be thinking: “I can’t afford to hire an artist for every single track cover or t-shirt design.”
But here’s the real question: can you afford to lose your fans’ trust?
If a band as established as Three Days Grace can lose a large group of fans overnight, this is an issue you should be thinking about very carefully.
AI images may seem like the quick, easy, budget-friendly option, but your visuals are part of your brand identity. They communicate your values before you ever say a word. It might not seem like a big deal on the surface, but if those values look hypocritical, careless, or disrespectful, fans will notice.
Ask yourself: Does using AI fit your Brand Values?
Because once you lose respect and trust, your entire music career is at risk.
